Heraldry Consultancy Is your family, or company, entitled to a legitimate coat of arms? Would you like it to be? Many people labour under the misconception (or have been misled into believing) that, because they have the same surname as a family with a right to bear arms then, they, too can bear those arms. This is akin to believing that you own a potato crisp factory if your name is Smith or a car manufacturers if you are called Ford. However, a Coat of Arms may be specifically designed for an individual and its authorisation negotiated through the appropriate Granting Authority. Although the final design is within the specific remit of the Granting Authorities (e.g. the Kings of Arms at the College of Arms for England and Wales www.college-of-arms.gov.uk and the Lord Lyon for Scotland) suggestions may be made which, being heraldically correct, stand a very good chance of being accepted. Bernard Juby, an Honorary Fellow of the Heraldry Society and himself from an armigerous family, has been instrumental in the design and acceptance of many such Coats of Arms. Fees are charged for the various stages of a Grant application. There is also a fixed scale of fees charged by the Granting Authorities which varies according to the type of Grant (e.g for an individual or for a corporate body) as well as the various elements within the Grant. For example the additional Grant of a Badge is extra to that for the Achievement of Arms - although the former cannot be Granted in the absence of the latter.
